Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of health and wellness that has been used in China for over 2,000 years.

Traditional acupuncture takes a holistic approach to health and regards illness as a sign that the body is out of balance. It considers;

    • The laws of Nature

    • The environment around us

    • The natural physical response of the nervous system

In TCM, the ‘body’ we refer to is not only defined by the organs and systems it carries, but also as the home of the Mind & Spirit.

What is acupuncture?

In a nutshell, Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical procedure consisting of inserting fine, solid needles into specific points on the body in order to regulate the flow of Qi (life force/vital energy) around the body through pathways called Meridians or Channels.

Channels make up an exhaustive network that connects everything in the body, stimulating the body's natural tendency to resist or overcome illnesses

From the Chinese Medicine point of view, “where is pain, there is stagnation of Qi” a blockage on the smooth flow of Qi in the body.

How acupuncture can help

Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemical messenger molecules. The resulting biochemical changes influence the body's homeostatic mechanisms, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being. Stimulation of certain acupuncture points has been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress (Hui 2010).
