FAQs

How many treatments will I need?

It varies from person to person, that simply shows our individuality. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a holistic approach so it sees each patient as unique. Some patients will only need few sessions, especially if the main condition is recent or acute. Long term/chronic issues will require a longer process.

Acupuncture is cumulative, therefore weekly sessions are quite usual to begin with, for perhaps five or six treatments in order to get the best results, reducing in frequency as your body responds.

What does it feel like?

Acupuncture needles are so fine that most people don’t feel them being inserted. It is normal to feel a mild tingle, dull ache or warmth as your acupuncturist adjusts the needle. Many people feel deeply relaxed during the treatment.

Is acupuncture safe?

Needles are single-used and disposable. Definitive surveys in the UK and Germany concluded that when practised by properly trained qualified traditional acupuncturists such as BAcC members, the risk of adverse events from acupuncture is extremely low.

Do I need to be ill to have acupuncture?

The straight answer is no. Traditional acupuncture can also be used as a preventive measure to strengthen the constitution and promote general well-being which can prove challenging in the modern world.

Before and after appointment

It is advisable to have something to eat prior to an acupuncture session as low blood sugar during treatment may make you feel faint. Also try to avoid stimulants such as coffee just before your treatment.

After treatment you may feel a little more tired and relaxed than usual, this is perfectly normal.

Please wear loose clothing for your appointment so you are comfortable on the treatment couch. If this is not possible, you might be asked to remove any items of clothing to get to the part of the body to be worked on. Underwear will always stay on and you will be covered by drapes.
