Other Ancient Techniques

In Chinese Medicine the practice of a variety of techniques and tools has been used for centuries. In combination with Acupuncture, some of these ancient techniques might be applied in a treatment if the patient’s presenting condition would benefit from it.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves burning an herb referred to as moxa on or close to the body to produce a therapeutic effect. Moxa is made from the ground-up leaves of the plant Mugwort (Artemisia Argyi). Moxibustion has been scientifically shown to stimulate white blood cell production, thus boosting the Immune System.

Cupping

A partial vacuum is created in a glass or plastic cup that is applied directly to the skin. The tissue underlying the cup is pulled up into it, breaking small vessels in the area and resulting in local bruising.

Cupping stimulates the flow of Blood, balances and realigns the flow of Qi, breaks up areas of congestion and creates an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body.

Gua sha

Gua sha is an Oriental skin-scraping technique that dates back over 2,000 years. Gua means to scrape, rub or extract; Sha means sand or toxins. Gua sha creates a reddish, elevated, millet-like skin rash (known as petechiae) that appears on the area being rubbed referred to as the Sha.

Gua sha immediately improves blood circulation and general metabolic processes to the area where it has been applied; it forces blood out of the tiny capillaries, allowing new blood to flow in.

Auricular Acupuncture

It is the stimulation of the auricle of the external ear for the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions in other parts of the body. Specific points on the ear can also be stimulated by manual pressure, referred to as auricular acupressure or ear reflexology. Acupuncture points on the ear can also be stimulated with lasers, magnets or ear pellets.

Electro-Acupuncture

It was first developed in China in the 1930’s. After acupuncture needles have been inserted in the body, an electric current, using an electro-acupuncture machine, is passed through them to provide stimulation and relieve pain.
